Credit impot is a tax credit for renewable energy products which you claim when you submit your tax retun. You don't have to pay any tax to get it but you must be registered with the French tax authority. It covers on average about 50% of the cost of the materials but not the labour.
The cheque solaire is a grant payment which you receive 6-8 weeks after having a solar water heating system installed. It can be as much as 700 Euros on top of the tax credits so it's well worth applying for.
